20 February 2013 -Banda Aceh, Sumatra.  A team from the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme (SOCP: comprising PanEco Foundation (Switzerland), Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) Aceh, and Yayasan Ekosistem Lestari (YEL) Medan successfully confiscated an infant orangutan on 19 February 2013 at Afdeling II of PT. Socfindo plantation, Sidojadi Village, Darul Makmur sub-district of Nagan Raya district in Aceh province, Indonesia. SOCP field staff first heard about the young male infant orangutan shortly after it was captured on January 26 in an area known locally as Suak Puntung, in the Tripa Peat Swamp Forest of the Leuser Ecosystem, within the concession of the palm oil company PT Surya Panen Subur 2 (PT. SPS-2).

Starbucks also sells the image of a model corporation that is on the cutting edge of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in the local, national and international arena. Starbucks prides itself on its environmental stewardship and fair trade record. It uses recycled materials in its containers and has partnered with environmental organizations such as Conservation International to further its CSR. It has CSR goals to purchase increased volume of organic and fair trade coffee from villagers in the growing countries such as Indonesia.

Yet, unknowingly or unwittingly, Starbucks may be part of a supply chain that is killing the endangered orangutan. How can that be?

Illegal Wildlife Trading

Indonesian Police arrested a Depok resident in possession of dozens of stuffed rare animals and pelts in July — after a long hiatus on breaking down illegal wildlife trading.

At least 25 stuffed animals and pelts of rare and protected species were seized by the police, in Cimanggis, Depok, West Java, in the July raid.
